What is a Typical Reflexology Treatment Like?
A typical treatment lasts from 45 to 60 minutes. Your first treatment will take longer as it begins with a consultation about your health and lifestyle. It is important that you give a complete and accurate health history. If you're pregnant I'm afraid I won't be able to see you in the first trimester of your pregnancy due to the risk of miscarriage.
Please see the contra-indications page for those of you who may need a written consent from your GP prior to treatment.
You will be asked to sign the consent sheet on your form
You are then asked to remove your shoes and socks and sit comfortably in a reclining chair or on a massage table.
I will then assess your feet to ensure that there is no risk of cross infection for you or me and identify possible areas of tenderness or tension. Sometimes you may be asked to wash your feet or hands prior to your treatment.
After cleaning your feet and applying cream, lotion or oil, I will then perform some relaxing and invigorating movements to warm your feet up in preparation for your reflexology session and to get you used to my touch.
The foot/hand that I'll be working on last will be wrapped in a towel and the right foot/hand will be left exposed for me to commence reflexology.
The session will terminate in a relaxing or invigorating massage depending on what you will be doing following the session. Both feet will be covered whilst I receive feedback, give advice and complete your notes.
It is important that you drink plenty of water following your session and avoid alcohol.
Post Treatment
Most people feel calm and relaxed after a treatment. You may even feel sleepy.
Some people have a Contra-action or Healing Crisis. This can either occur during the session or up to 48 hours after. This is a sign that the body is ridding itself of toxins and returning to homeostasis. It is temporary and is part of the healing process. The signs and symptoms can be as follows:-
Nausea (feeling sick)
Anxiety
Tearful
Headache
Increased passage of urine
More frequent bowel movements.
