What is Reflexology?
Reflexology is an holistic complementary therapy that involves the application of pressure to specific points, known as reflexes, on the feet, hands, ears or face to encourage the body to heal from within. Reflexology balances the nervous system and clears energy blockages in the various areas of the body, as well as releasing chemicals like endorphins to help reduce pain and stress. Thus, Reflexology produces a positive effect on the organs and glands thereby enabling homeostasis within the body.
The right foot/hand corresponds to the right hand side of the body and the left foot/hand to the left hand side of the body. The parts of the body that are found on both sides, such as the kidneys, will have corresponding reflexes on both feet or hands. However, the parts of the body that are found on just one side, such as the gall bladder, are only represented by the foot/hand on that same side.
As Reflexology is an holistic therapy it treats the person as a whole, rather than just focusing on a set of symptoms. Holistic therapies take the emotional, spiritual and physical being into account. |
Reflexology is more than a simple massage, it is a powerful therapy which has been shown to have a very positive effect on health and well being. The trained Reflexologist is able to detect blockages or sensitive areas in the foot/hands which will correspond to the area of the body which is out of stasis or unbalanced. By working over these reflex areas for a number of reflexology treatments, the blockages and tenderness will usually reduce as the body reaches homeostasis or becomes balanced.

What are the Benefits of Reflexology?
Reflexology is also used for post-operative or palliative care as it can be beneficial in alleviating some of the symptoms of various treatments. Reflexology is recommended as a complementary therapy and should not replace medical treatment.
